The Romanian Fintech Report 2024 highlights seven years of growth and maturity in Romania’s fintech sector, now integral to the country’s digital transformation. Building on previous editions, it shows progress in collaboration between startups, regulators, financial institutions, and academia. The 2024 report focuses on AI, open banking, embedded finance, and cybersecurity, alongside ongoing challenges like regulation and talent gaps. Coordinated by Bucharest Business School with input from multiple universities, it includes seven-year data analysis and insights from ten industry experts. The report aims to foster dialogue and support innovation across Romania’s evolving fintech ecosystem.

Both the Romanian FinTech sector and the Bulgarian Fintech sector have been developing faster mostly during the last five years.  The present report is the first to present and to assess in a more complex manner the current state of the fintech ecosystem for both markets. It is based on a joint approach using the methodology and structure used in 2022 in the Romanian Fintech Report and the one used in the 2022 Bulgarian Fintech report. The report also incorporates information that was presented in the previous Romanian, Bulgarian and Estonian report, with the clear purpose of ensuring consistency and comparability.

This 2022 report is the first to assess in a more complex manner the current state of the fintech ecosystem. The report is based on the methodology and structure used by the representatives of TALTECH School of Business and Governance and by the representatives of Fintech Estonia in their report published in 2021 for the Estonian Fintech sector. The report also incorporates information presented in the Estonian report with the clear purpose of ensuring consistence and comparability. The current report also includes an analysis of the developments of the sector emerged as a response or as
a cause of the COVID 19 pandemic.
